Many, many friends and colleagues are trying to get through the Grammy first round.

For context, any album released this year can be nominated if you know the right people. Then people vote. There also used to be committees and I can’t remember if that’s a thing anymore but I digress.

Historically, the Grammys are a popularity contest. People who are more well known are “front of mind” and they win. Many musicians actually DO listen to all the nominees but you don’t have to know anything about any of the nominees to vote. You only have to be a voting member. And you must pay $150 for the privilege, after someone nominates you.

Some large organizations, who shall remain nameless, have paid for all the members of their organization to become voting members. Producers have done some weird stuff too. Unsurprisingly, the deck is stacked against most bands without big name producers and labels behind them.

All that said, if you are one of the lucky ones chosen from the first round, it can mean a lot of future work for the composer, and maybe the band.

This is a band I’ve been involved in for a long time. I’ve also commissioned Remy to write for my band. I love what he does and I love him as a person.

All I ask is that you listen to his music. I don’t care if you’re a voter. I don’t care if you aren’t. Please listen to and enjoy this album.r

@maestramusicorg has a longstanding tradition of sending cookies to shows when they open on Broadway. Gatsby never saw ours - either they went to a different department by mistake or got snatched.

An @iatse member complained recently that all musicians do on Broadway is show up and play while he has to deal with work calls and presets. I said he doesn’t see all the stuff we do to be able to play. Practicing multiple instruments, maintaining the craft, multiple adjunct teaching gigs, etc.

He said, “Yeah, right.”

If our union family thinks we are full of 💩, how can the general public understand it?
